Sbragia Family Vineyard

2012 Andolsen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

« Back to Dry Creek Wines

Dry Creek Cabernets have a distinctive profile that I have always loved and this Cabernet showcases the best of those characteristics. Sweet red fruit and anise aromas are followed by bright acidity, plush flavors of black fruit and sweet spice. The tannins are complemented by a supple mouth feel and an elegant finish.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Andolsen Vineyard is outstanding, which is not surprising given how many great Cabernet Sauvignons Ed Sbragia fashioned as the principal winemaker at Beringer for so many years. Notes of graphite, charcoal, blackcurrants and incense are found in this full-bodied, ripe Cabernet along with silky tannins, and a luscious, fleshy mouthfeel. Drink now-2030.

Highly-respected, long-time veteran winemaker Ed Sbragia received some terrific reviews in the Napa report published in the October, 2014 issue of The Wine Advocate, but he also produces a strong line-up of wines from Sonoma as evidenced by the following wines.

Splashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot make their way into this vineyard-designate, a well-made offering of cola and blackberry with supple tannins. Layered and complex, it's medium in weight and length, with a density of oak on the finish. Drink now through 2020.

Vineyard

I buy these grapes from Dr. Andolsen, our long-time friend (over 20 years) and family doctor.  We select the fruit from my favorite blocks on this vineyard on the west side of Dry Creek in the rolling hills of the Coastal Range in Sonoma County, California.  It’s a great piece of land and the wine it makes offers an elegant, yet ripe, rich cherry characteristic that I always associate with this appellation.

Vintage

"Classic" and "perfect" are just two accolades being bestowed upon the 2012 growing season and harvest. Textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into our cellar. The abundance of perfectly ripe grapes - with a smooth balance of acids and sugars - produced excellent wines.

Winemaking

I believe in taking a minimalist approach to this wine during winemaking in order to preserve the rustic qualities that I love about this Dry Creek Cabernet that is always evident when it comes into the winery at Harvest. The 2012 Andolsen Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels imparting cedar and brown spice aromas and flavors and supple tannins. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation which softened the tannins and contributed to a rich, lengthy finish. Adam and I blended in a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot, adding structure and subtle complimentary herbal characteristics.
