TWO FAMILY LEGACIES, UNITED
In June 2026, Brookside Winery, one of California’s oldest family wine legacies, acquired Sbragia Family Vineyards, bringing together two respected wine families whose combined contributions have helped shape the history and reputation of California wine.
Founded in 1832 by Theophile Vaché, Brookside Winery traces its roots to the earliest generations of California winegrowing. Under the leadership of the Biane family, Brookside grew into the largest wine producer in California and the sixth-largest winery in the United States, operating 36 retail tasting rooms and producing more than 150 different wines at its peak. Today that legacy is carried forward by sixth-generation family member Tim Bacino, founder of GEN 7 Wines, who began reviving the Brookside heritage in 2008.
The acquisition was born from a reconnection between Tim and Ed Sbragia in late 2025, but the connection between the families extends back decades: Tim’s cousin, Jon Biane, worked alongside Ed at Beringer Vineyards, where together they helped elevate Beringer’s reputation as one of the world’s premier wine estates.
“When I reconnected with Ed, I immediately recognized a shared commitment to preserving family heritage and winemaking excellence,” said Bacino. “The Sbragia family has built one of the most respected names in American wine. Combining that legacy with the history of Brookside Winery creates something truly special for future generations.”
Brookside Winery intends to preserve the heritage, vineyard relationships, and uncompromising quality standards established by the Sbragia family while investing in the future growth of the brand, including the return of our Dry Creek Valley tasting room.
